What are Google Webmaster Tools?

How to add your WordPress site to Google Webmaster Tools

Go to the Google Webmaster Tools website and sign in with a Google account. Once you are logged in, add the URL of your website and click the Add New Website button.

On the next screen, you will be prompted to verify ownership of the website you are adding. You can upload an HTML file to the root directory of your website using FTP or click the Alternate method to get a meta tag that you will add to your WordPress website.

To easily add the meta tag to your website, you’ll install and activate our Insert Headers and Footers plugin. Copy the meta-tag provided by the webmaster tools that can look like this:

Now go to Settings »Insert headers and footers and paste the meta tag into the header field. Save your changes and return to the Google Webmaster Tools website and click on the Verify site button.

Alternatively, if you are using WordPress SEO plugin, then copy the verification key into the content part of the meta tag and paste it into WordPress SEO plugin. Click on SEO in your WordPress admin sidebar and scroll down to the webmaster tools section to paste the unique key into the Google Tools for webmasters field. Save your changes and go back to the Google Webmaster Tools website to verify your website.
